Description:

The Housing Justice working group works on issues at the intersection of housing and health justice. We believe housing, like health, is a fundamental right and work with community partners and fellow healthcare workers and trainees to fight for a housing system that serves all New Yorkers.

We have been active since the peak of the COVID pandemic when we fought for extensions on eviction moratoria and have continued to work on legislative campaigns around tenant rights, supported the needs of new arrivals in the city shelter system, and conducted teach-ins to highlight housing issues for healthcare colleagues.

We are currently working on 2 main projects:

  • Supporting the Stop the Sweeps campaign to end the violent practice of homeless encampment sweeps. Join us at our Healthcare and Housing, not Sweeps! Rally on Thursday July 23rd at 4:30pm at Washington Square Park!

  • Taking a deep dive into the mayor's recently released "Block by Block" housing plan, to highlight key elements of the plan, and identify areas of ongoing advocacy, and potential impact on health. We hope to share these findings back with the entire HJ4NY network in due time.
